Bethabara
BETHAB'ARA (beth-ab'a-ra; "house of the ford").
In the KJV, the place on the E bank of the
Jordan where
John was baptizing (Jn 1:28); placed by scholars at the ford 'Abarah, just N of
Beisan but there are numerous fords.
The NASB and NIV read "in
Bethany beyond the Jordan." Many of the best Gk. manuscripts have "Bethany" instead
of "Bethabara." This is not the Bethany near
Jerusalem.
The sixth-century Madeba map shows Bethabara on the W bank of the Jordan near
the traditional site of Jesus' baptism.
