steward
(usually Heb. sar, "head" person; Gk. epitropos, "manager"; oikonomos,
"overseer").
A manager or superintendent of another's household. There is mention of
Herod's steward (Lk 8:3); "manager," NIV. As great confidence was reposed in these
officials, Paul describes Christian ministers as the stewards of God over His
church (1 Cor. 4:1-2; "those given a trust," NIV). Believers are also said to be
stewards of God, of God's gifts and riches (1 Pet 4:10).
