Map of the Apostle Paul's Third Missionary Journey 54-57 A.D. View Interactive Map
This map reveals the areas in Asia and Greece where Paul visited in his third missionary journey. On Paul's third missionary journey he returned to the cities he had first visited on his first missionary journey. During this time he decided to remain in Ephesus for about 3 years, and this city was the main focus of his activities and an important Christian community (Acts 19). As Christianity was spreading in Asia Minor Paul regained communication with Greece and journeyed to Corinth two times because of the many conflicts within the Corinthian Church. In fact during his second visit to Corinth he wrote the Epistle to the Romans.Later he returned to Jerusalem to provide the suffering Church in Jerusalem with generous offerings given by gentiles Churches in Europe. Paul made it a plan to travel to Rome and even Spain (Rom 15:28), but while he was in Jerusalem he was wildly accused by the Jews from Asia in the Temple and a riot began (57 AD). This led to Paul being arrested and taken as a prisoner and sent by the Roman commander to the proconsul Felix at Caesarea. During the trial Paul appealed to Caesar (Acts 21-26), after two years his wish was granted and he was put on a ship with a Roman escort and was set to sail to Rome. During the journey there was a violent storm and they were shipwrecked on the island of Malta. Paul was brought into Italy where he was under house-arrest and yet allowed to preach the Gospel of Jesus. (See Map of the Journey of Paul to Rome). According to tradition Paul was martyred in Rome during the time of the Great Fire in 64 AD.
Matthew 16:18 "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
Jesus promised that He would build His church and that the "gates of
Hades" would not prevail against it. Paul had set out this second time,
around 51 A.D. to re-visit those churches that he had help to establish.
He was very aware that it was not his responsibility to plant the
churches, or to maintain and protect them, but that he was just an
instrument in Gods eternal purposes.
Paul could rest in the fact that the Lord would cause the increase, and
Paul had no doubt rested on this truth because the task that was before
him would have been impossible if it had not been for the strength and
guidance that was provided by the Lord.
Paul and his companions were continually persecuted by the Jewish
leaders from Asia and Greece, yet the Lord protected them in every
circumstance and Paul was determined to "run the race" that was set
before him.
