innkeeper

One who managed an inn.

In Old Testament times, most travelers stayed in private dwellings or slept in the open.

By New Testament times some people managed inns (Lk 10:35) which were often not very comfortable or safe. Mary and Joseph stopped at a larger private dwelling, because it was the custom for such homeowners to rent out dwelling quarters during festival times (Lk 2:7).
