A-10 on the Map
The Philistines were a people, apparently immigrants from the
Mediterranean region (Casluhim and Caphtorim) who settled in the maritime plain.
Their five main cities were: Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Gath, and Ekron.
The Philistines were:
The Teleset or Pulesat who were mentioned as raiders attacking Egypt and
eastern Mediterranean coasts in the early 12th century BC.
Genesis 10:14 -
And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim.
Amos 9:7 -
[Are] ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith
the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the
Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?
Met by Israelites on settlement in Canaan
Judges 3:3 -
[Namely], five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the
Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baalhermon
unto the entering in of Hamath.
The enemies of Israel
Judges 3:31 -
And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six
hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
Judges 10:7 -
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the
hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the children of Ammon.
Judges 13:5 -
For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his
head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall
begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.
1 Samuel 4:1 -
And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the
Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched
in Aphek.
1 Samuel 13:3 -
And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that [was] in Geba, and the
Philistines heard [of it]. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land,
saying, Let the Hebrews hear.
1 Samuel 17:1 -
Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered
together at Shochoh, which [belongeth] to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and
Azekah, in Ephesdammim.
1 Samuel 31:2 -
And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the
Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul's sons.
Campaigned against by David
2 Samuel 3:18 -
Now then do [it]: for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my
servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines,
and out of the hand of all their enemies.
2 Samuel 5:17 -
But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel,
all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard [of it], and went
down to the hold.
2 Samuel 5:18 -
The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.
2 Samuel 5:19 -
And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt
thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I
will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.
2 Samuel 5:20 -
And David came to Baalperazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD
hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters.
Therefore he called the name of that place Baalperazim.
2 Samuel 5:21 -
And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them.
2 Samuel 5:22 -
And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of
Rephaim.
2 Samuel 5:23 -
And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; [but] fetch
a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.
2 Samuel 5:24 -
And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go
out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.
2 Samuel 5:25 -
And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from
Geba until thou come to Gazer.
2 Samuel 8:1 -
And after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued
them: and David took Methegammah out of the hand of the Philistines.
2 Samuel 21:15 -
Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and
his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed
faint.
Defeated by King Hezekiah
2 Kings 18:8 -
He smote the Philistines, [even] unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the
tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.
Isaiah 9:12 -
The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel
with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand [is]
stretched out still.
Jeremiah 47:1 -
The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines,
before that Pharaoh smote Gaza.
The Philistines disappeared from history after the Babylonian conquest.

Genesis 26:18 -

And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines'
garrison, [there was] a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the
other side: and the name of the one [was] Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
1 Samuel 28:15 -
And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul
answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make
war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither
by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make
known unto me what I shall do.
2 Chronicles 28:18 -
The Philistines also
had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had
taken Bethshemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with the villages
thereof, and Timnah with the villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages
thereof: and they dwelt there.
1 Samuel 18:27 -
Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two
hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale
to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal
his daughter to wife.
1 Samuel 5:8 -
They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto
them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they
answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they
carried the ark of the God of Israel about [thither].
1 Samuel 31:7 -
And when the men of Israel that [were] on the other side of the valley, and
[they] that [were] on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled,
and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came
and dwelt in them.
2 Chronicles 17:11 -
Also [some] of the Philistines brought
Jehoshaphat presents, and tribute silver; and the Arabians brought him flocks,
seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred he
goats.
1 Samuel 10:5 -
After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where [is] the garrison of the Philistines:
and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou
shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a
psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall
prophesy:
1 Samuel 27:1 -
And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul:
[there is] nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the
land of the Philistines;
and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so
shall I escape out of his hand.
1 Samuel 17:46 -
This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and
take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this
day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the
earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
2 Samuel 3:18 -
Now then do [it]: for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my
servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines,
and out of the hand of all their enemies.
Obadiah 1:19 -
And [they of] the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and [they of] the plain
the Philistines:
and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and
Benjamin [shall possess] Gilead.
1 Samuel 6:18 -
And the golden mice, [according to] the number of all the cities of the Philistines [belonging]
to the five lords, [both] of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto
the great [stone of] Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: [which
stone remaineth] unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Bethshemite.
1 Samuel 28:4 -
And the Philistines gathered
themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all
Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa.
1 Samuel 18:17 -
And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to
wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD'S battles. For Saul said,
Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be
upon him.
1 Samuel 7:3 -
And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the
LORD with all your hearts, [then] put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from
among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he
will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
Judges 15:5 -
And when he had set the brands on fire, he let [them] go into the standing corn
of the Philistines,
and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, with the vineyards
[and] olives.
1 Kings 15:27 -
And Baasha the son of Ahijah, of the house of Issachar, conspired against him;
and Baasha smote him at Gibbethon, which [belonged] to thePhilistines;
for Nadab and all Israel laid siege to Gibbethon.

And it shall be, when thou shalt hear a sound of going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, [that] then thou shalt go out to battle: for God is gone forth
before thee to smite the host of the Philistines.
1 Samuel 6:4 -
Then said they, What [shall be] the trespass offering which we shall return to
him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, [according to]
the number of the lords of the Philistines:
for one plague [was] on you all, and on your lords.
1 Samuel 14:19 -
And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that
[was] in the host of the Philistines went
on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
