Balearic Islands (Baliares) Several islands in the western Mediterranean Sea, lying east of Spain. They were originally inhabited by the Iberians, later by the Greeks, and then the Carthaginians. They were known as the "magic isles" of Hesperides no doubt because of their romantic beauty. The Romans drove out the Carthaginians and founded the cities of Palma and Pollentia, they settled 3,000 Italians there. During the first century AD Augustus made the islands a place of banishment. Today the Balearic Islands form 1936 square miles and include Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza, Formentera, and 11 smaller islands which altogether form an archipelago.
