Shofar
The Shofar: Trumpet of the Lord
The ram's
horn trumpet (shofar) has been used by the Hebrews since ancient times to summon
or proclaim. It was even the shofar that heralded the revelation at Mount Sinai:
Exod 19:16 Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there
were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the
sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp
trembled.
The walls of Jericho fell after the trumpets (shofarim) were blown. The shofar
appeared frequently in the Bible. They were used:
- To gather the people (general or for war)
- To proclaim victory over their enemies
- On the great day of atonement
- At the jubilee
- At the bringing up of
the ark of the covenant from the household
- At the anointing of kings
- At the dedication of Solomon's temple
- In worship
- etc. etc.
