Painting by Raphael of Lot and His
Daughters Fleeing from Sodom and Gomorrah
The exact location of the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah remains a mystery. Many scholars have speculated about certain areas within the vicinity of the Dead Sea region. One speculation that has been suggested is that since there were five principal cities of the plain, and there happens to be five streams feeding the southern portion of the Dead Sea, then it is possible that each city was built upon one of the streams. Another popular theory speculates that Sodom and Gomorrah were located in the southern portion of the Dead Sea and that when the destruction happened the cities sank and were buried by the sea.
The fact that the Bible mentions the cities being destroyed by fire and brimstone (sulfur) from heaven is very interesting, because the whole area around the southern portion of the Dead Sea is ridden with asphalt and sulfur. Even the stones in this area are more prone to burning. One interesting fact is that the Greeks called the Dead Sea "Lake Asphaltites" because of all the asphalt. The Bible records that when Abraham arose he looked and saw the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah like the "smoke of a furnace" and since he was in Mamre he would have had a clear view of the southern portion of the Dead Sea. (See Map)
Type of Catastrophe
There have been many theories regarding what type of catastrophe destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Some say it was a volcano eruption, others say it was a great earthquake, and still others believe it was a shower of meteors from heaven. Although there have been many catastrophic events that have happened on our planet throughout history, there is really no way to know what happened here. We do know that it was a miracle from heaven, a supernatural event that caused two cities to be destroyed and removed from history. One theory that has not been mentioned is very interesting, it is possible that during the time of Abraham the level of the Dead Sea was much lower than it is today. The deepest portion being the northern two thirds was actually the whole Sea, and the southern portion was a lush plain where the five cities were located, and even possibly the "vale of Siddim" mentioned in Genesis 14:3. when the fire and brimstone rained down from heaven it also caused the waters of the Dead Sea to flood the southern portion. This would explain why Lot and his daughters fled to higher ground. However it happened Jesus confirmed the historicity of the event, but the details remain a mystery.
Map of the Supposed Locations of Sodom
and Gomorrah
Background of the Event
After Abraham and Lot decided to part ways, Abraham gave him the
choice of which part of the land he would like to dwell in, and
Abraham would dwell in the other part of the land. Lot shows the
beautiful lush valley of the Jordan, the city of Sodom. Sodom turned
out to be a very wicked city, and one day three strangers came to
visit Abraham while he was in Mamre. One of the strangers turned out
to be the LORD Himself, and he told Abraham of his plans to destroy
the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham stood in the way to
prevent this and he interceded for the cities, asking the Lord why
he would destroy the righteous with the wicked. But the cities were
too wicked and were going to be destroyed, yet Abrahams nephew Lot
and his family were spared.
Lot's Incest
Lot and his daughters first
took refuge in the village of Zoar, but they were afraid of the
possibility of more destruction and moved to higher ground in the
mountains. The Bible records that Lot committed incest with his
daughters and the children who were born to them were Moab and Ben
Ammi whose descendents were the Moabites And the Ammonites of the
Bible. It is interesting that Ruth was a Moabite and she was King
David's great grandmother, and she was mentioned in the genealogy of
Jesus in Matthew chapter one.
Two Other Cities
The Bible also records two other cities that were destroyed in the catastrophe of Sodom and Gomorrah. They are mentioned in Deuteronomy chapter 29:
Deuteronomy 29:23 "And that the whole land thereof [is] brimstone, and salt, [and] burning, [that] it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom, and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath"

burning; the
walled, a city in the vale of Siddim (Gen. 13:10; 14:1-16). The
wickedness of its inhabitants brought down upon it fire from heaven,
by which it was destroyed (18:16- 33; 19:1-29; Deut. 23:17). This
city and its awful destruction are frequently alluded to in
Scripture (Deut. 29:23; 32:32; Isa. 1:9, 10; 3:9; 13:19; Jer. 23:14;
Ezek. 16:46-56; Zeph. 2:9; Matt. 10:15; Rom. 9:29; 2 Pet. 2:6,
etc.). No trace of it or of the other cities of the plain has been
discovered, so complete was their destruction. Just opposite the
site of Zoar, on the south-west coast of the Dead Sea, is a range of
low hills, forming a mass of mineral salt called Jebel Usdum, "the
hill of Sodom." It has been concluded, from this and from other
considerations, that the cities of the plain stood at the southern
end of the Dead Sea. Others, however, with much greater probability,
contend that they stood at the northern end of the sea. [in 1897].

1:4-7; Mark 6:11; Matthew 10:15; Deuteronomy 29:23). (See GOMORRAH.)
Palmer and Drake traversing the Negeb in a S.E. direction, as far as
Mount Hor, made a detour to jebel ("mount") Madherah. At its summit
and base are blocks of stone, of which the Arabs say: "a people once
dwelt there, to whom travelers came seeking hospitality; but the
people did to them a horrible deed, wherefore the Almighty in anger
rained down stones, and destroyed them from off the face of the
earth." Sodom is interpreted "burning" or else "vineyard" (Gesenius),
"fortification" (Furst). Abraham could see the smoke of the burning
cities from near Hebron. The Lord over night announced to him
Sodom's doom, at some spot on the way from Mamre or Hebron toward
Sodom, to which he had accompanied the angels (Genesis 18:16).
Tradition says the spot was Caphar Berucha, from which the Dead Sea
is visible through a ravine. Long ranges of hills intervene between
Hebron and Sodom, but from the hill over Hebron or Mamre through a
gap in the chain the whole district of the Jordan valley is visible.
Lot at first pitched only towards Sodom, not until afterward did he
go further south to Sodom itself (Genesis 13:12; Genesis 14:12; and
Genesis 14:3 says expressly the vale of Siddim is the Salt Sea).
This favors the S. of the Dead Sea site for Sodom, etc., which the
traditional names confirm.

(burning), one of the most ancient cities of Syria. It is commonly
mentioned in connection with Gomorrah, but also with Admah and
Zeboim, and on one occasion -- Ge 14:1 ... -- with Bela or Zoar.
Sodom was evidently the chief town in the settlement. The four are
first named in the ethnological records of Ge 10:19 as belonging to
the Canaanites. The next mention of the name of Sodom, Ge 13:10-13
gives more certain indication of the position of the city. Abram and
Lot are standing together between Bethel and Ai, ver. 3, taking a
survey of the land around and below them. Eastward of them, and
absolutely at their feet, lay the "circle of Jordan." The whole
circle was one great oasis --"a garden of Jehovah." ver. 10. In the
midst of the garden the four cities of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and
Zeboim appear to have been situated. It is necessary to notice how
absolutely the cities are identified with the district. In the
subsequent account of their destruction, Ge 19:1 ... the
topographical terms are employed with all the precision which is
characteristic of such early times. The mention of the Jordan is
conclusive as to the situation of the district, for the Jordan
ceases where it enters the Dead Sea, and can have no existence south
of that point. The catastrophe by which they were destroyed is
described in Ge 19:1 ... as a shower of brimstone and fire from
Jehovah. However we may interpret the words of the earliest
narrative, one thing is certain --that the lake was not one of the
agents in the catastrophe. From all these passages, though much is
obscure, two things seem clear: 1. That Sodom and the rest of the
cities of the plain of Jordan stood on the north of the Dead Sea; 2.
That neither the cities nor the district were submerged by the lake,
but that the cities were overthrown and the land spoiled, and that
it may still be seen in its desolate condition. When, however, we
turn to more modern views, we discover a remarkable variance from
these conclusions. 1. The opinion long current that the five cities
were submerged in the lake, and that their remains--walls, columns
and capitals--might he still discerned below the water, hardly needs
refutation after the distinct statement and the constant implication
of Scripture. But, 2. A more serious departure from the terms of the
ancient history is exhibited in the prevalent opinion that the
cities stood at the south end of the lake. This appears to, have
been the belief of Josephus and Jerome. It seems to have been
universally held by the medieval historians and pilgrims, and it is
adopted by modern topographers probably without exception. There are
several grounds for this belief; but the main point on...

sod'-um (cedhom; Sodoma) One of the 5 CITIES OF THE PLAIN (which
see), destroyed by fire from heaven in the time of Abraham and Lot
(Gen 19:24). The wickedness of the city became proverbial. The sin
of sodomy was an offense against nature frequently connected with
idolatrous practices (see Rawlinson, History of Phoenicia). See
SODOMITE. The fate of Sodom and Gomorrah is used as a warning to
those who reject the gospel (Mt 10:15; 11:24; 2 Pet 2:6; Jude 1:7).
The word is used in a typical sense in Rev 11:8. Sodom was probably
located in plain South of the Dead Sea, now covered with water. The
name is still preserved in Jebel Usdum (Mt. Sodom). See ARABAH;

submersion,
one of the five cities of the plain of Siddim (q.v.) which were
destroyed by fire (Gen. 10:19; 13:10; 19:24, 28). These cities
probably stood close together, and were near the northern extremity
of what is now the Dead Sea. This city is always mentioned next
after Sodom, both of which were types of impiety and wickedness
(Gen. 18:20; Rom. 9:29). Their destruction is mentioned as an
"ensample unto those that after should live ungodly" (2 Pet. 2:6;
Jude 1:4-7). Their wickedness became proverbial (Deut. 32:32; Isa.
1:9, 10; Jer. 23:14). But that wickedness may be exceeded (Matt.
10:15; Mark 6:11). (See DEAD SEA ?T0000991).

Traces of the catastrophe recorded
in Genesis 19 are visible in the whole region about the Dead, or as
Scripture calls it, the Salt Sea. frontSALT SEA.) . Volcanic agency
and earthquake, accompanying the fire shower, may have produced the
deep depression of the sea, and so arrested the Jordan's original
onward course through the Arabah into the gulf of Akabah. The
northern end of the lake is 1,300 ft. deep, the southern only 13 ft.
below the surface. The southern division or bay of the sea most
probably was formed at a late date. It abounds with salt, throws up
bitumen, sulphur, and nitre on its shores. This answers to the vale
of Siddim, "full of slime pits" (Genesis 14:10); and it accords with
the destruction of the four cities of the plain by fire and
brimstone, and with the turning of Lot's wife into a pillar of salt.
Scripture does not say the cities were immersed in the sea, but that
they were destroyed by fire from heaven (Deuteronomy 29:23; Jeremiah
49:18; Jeremiah 50:40; Zephaniah 2:9; 2 Peter 2:6; Judges 1:4-7, "an
example unto those that after should live ungodly"; Amos 4:11). So
Josephus, B. J., 4:8, section 4. The traditional names of Usdum, and
site of Zoar, the hill of salt, said to have been Lot's wife, favor
the view that the cities lay either in or around the present
southern bay. Grove argues for the northern site that Abram and Lot
near Bethel could not have seen the southern valleys (Genesis 13:10)
but could see the northern, and that what they saw was "the Ciccar
of the Jordan," whereas Jordan flowed into the northern end of the
Dead Sea but not into the southern. But Genesis 13 probably means
only that Lot, seeing the Jordan N. of the Dead Sea, and knowing the
whole valley N. and S. to be well watered, chose it. Moreover, the
catastrophes palpable to sight all round the southern end imply that
the Jordan once flowed to the S. of that sea. Gomorrah means
submersion; Arabic ghamara, to "overwhelm with water." Gomorrah was
one of the five cities of the vale of Siddim whose forces were
routed by Chedorlaomer, until Abram helped them. Zoar or Bela alone
of the five, at Lot's request, escaped destruction by the fire from
the Lord. Jerusalem when corrupted (for "the corruption of the best
is the worst of all corruptions") is termed Sodom and her people
Gomer (Isaiah 1:9-10); as the church apostate corrupted is termed
"Babylon" (Revelation 17). Worse still are they who see Christ's
"mighty works" yet "repent not," and who receive not the apostles'
teaching (Matthew 10:15; Mark 6:11). The profound depression of the
plain of Gomorrah, the deepest on the earth, and its stagnant
tropical air, answered to its sunken morals. DeSaulcy thinks that in
Usdum and Um Zoghal traces of Sodom exist; and in Ain Feshkah (Goumran,
Arabic) on the N.W. traces of Gomorrah. Rather in wady Amrah is to
be sought a connection with Gomorrah. Tristram objects to the
southern site for Sodom and Gomorrah that Chedorlaomer marching from
mount Seir to Hazezon Tamar (Engedi) afterward meets the king of
Sodom in the vale of Siddim, which therefore in the order ought to
be rather at the northern end of the Dead Sea. Also Moses saw Zoar
from mount Nebo (Deuteronomy 34:3), which he could not had it been
at the S.E. of Dead Sea. He thinks that the southern bed of the sea
was formerly deeper than now, and that it was raised by deposits
brought from the Arabah. Lightning probably kindled the masses of
sulphurous bitumen abounding around. Combining with an earthquake,
the storm cast showers of ignited bitumen on the cities, so that
"the smoke of the country" was "as the smoke of a furnace," as
beheld by Abraham. God often uses natural means in His most
supernatural interventions.

"This handbook is dedicated to the proposition that every Christian should be a constant and devoted reader of the Bible, and that the primary business of the church and ministry is to lead, foster, and encourage their people in the habit."
"The vigor of our spiritual life will be in exact proportion to the place held by the Bible in our life and thoughts."
"Great has been the blessing from consecutive, diligent, daily study. I look upon it as a lost day when I have not had a good time over the word of God." - George Muller
"I prayed for faith, and thought that some day faith would come down and strike me like lightning. But faith did not seem to come. One day I read in the 10th chapter of Romans, 'Now faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.' I had closed my Bible, and prayed for faith. I now opened my Bible, and began to study, and faith has been growing ever since." - D. L. Moody
-H. H. Halley "Halley's Bible
Handbook" (Grand Rapids: Zondervan,
1960) p. 4, 6

Archaeological Study of the Bible
"A substantial proof for the accuracy of the Old Testament text has
come from archaeology. Numerous discoveries have confirmed the
historical accuracy of the biblical documents, even down to the
obsolete names of foreign kings... Rather than a manifestation of
complete ignorance of the facts of its day, the biblical record thus
reflects a great knowledge by the writer of his day, as well as
precision in textual transmission."
-Norman L. Geisler, William Nix "A General Introduction to the
Bible" 5th Edition (Chicago: Moody Press 1983) p. 253
