Map of the Northern Coastal Plain in Ancient Israel
Israel and Judah both had the privilege of sharing the Coastal Plain also known as the Maritime Plain. The Northern Coastal Plain ran from the Ladder of Tyre down to Joppa as seen in the map above, although the entire Coastal plain ran south to the River of Egypt (Wadi el-Arish), the distance was about 150 miles and the width varied from 3 miles in the north to 25 miles in the south. The northernmost section is called the Plain of Asher which ran from the Ladder of Tyre down to Mount Carmel. The eight mile width of coastland was filled with sand dunes and swamps, and the main city was Acco and Achzib.
The next plain moving south was the Plain of Dor, which ran from Mount Carmel to the Crocodile River, a distance of around 20 miles. The 2 mile wide coastland consisted of low hills, swamps and sand dunes. The main city was Dor.
The next section was the Plain of Sharon, which was a wonderful and luxurious area. There were many forests and it was very fertile for growing anything from flowers to fruits. The main cities were Caesarea, Aphek, Lydda, and Joppa.
